Understanding Special Enrollment Scenarios: What You Need to Know
How Life Changes Can Open Doors to Health Insurance Coverage
When it comes to health insurance, most people are familiar with the annual Open Enrollment Period. But what happens if you experience a major life change outside of that window? That’s where Special Enrollment comes into play. Special Enrollment scenarios allow individuals and families to sign up for health coverage outside of the regular enrollment period, but only if they experience certain qualifying events.
What Is Special Enrollment?
Special Enrollment is a time outside the yearly Open Enrollment Period when you can sign up for health insurance. You qualify for this period if you experience specific events that impact your coverage needs, such as losing other health coverage, getting married, or having a baby. The Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is designed to make sure that people facing major life transitions aren’t left uninsured until the next Open Enrollment comes around.
Common Special Enrollment Scenarios
- Losing Health Coverage: If you lose coverage due to job loss, divorce, aging out of a parent’s plan, or other reasons, you may qualify for a SEP.
- Household Changes: Events like getting married, having a baby, adopting a child, or placing a child for adoption can open up a Special Enrollment window.
- Moving to a New Area: If you move to a new ZIP code or county, or if you move to the U.S. from a foreign country or U.S. territory, you may qualify for new coverage options.
- Other Qualifying Events: Some other changes—such as changes in income that affect your eligibility for subsidies, or gaining citizenship—can also trigger a SEP.
- Enrollment/Plan Errors: Misinformed, misrepresentation, misconduct inaction by an insurance company or agent/broker that prevented you:
- Enrolling in a plan or the right plan
- getting the premium tax credit or cost sharing reduction you were approved for
- Technical Error
- Becoming newly eligible for savings
- Loss of Medicaid
- DV
How Long Do You Have to Act?
After a qualifying event, you usually have 60 days to apply for coverage under a Special Enrollment Period. It’s important to act quickly, as missing this window could mean waiting until the next Open Enrollment Period to get covered.
