Your Guide to Navigating Choices and Maximizing Benefits

If you or a loved one are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, it’s important to know about the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP), which runs from January 1 to March 31 every year. You may be one of the many folks to notice a bill at the pharmacy already. This is due to the ending of the Value-Based Insurance model and returning to the Medicare Advantage Rules. Some assistance will also be lowered. This will affect those on certain Dual plans or Special Needs Plans. That is why this timeframe offers a critical opportunity for individuals to review their current coverage and make changes if needed to better meet their healthcare needs.

During the MA OEP, you can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another or return to Original Medicare and join a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan with Medigap if needed. This flexibility is especially valuable if you discover that your current plan doesn’t cover your preferred doctors, medications, or services. It’s also an ideal time to compare plan benefits and costs to ensure you’re getting the most value for your healthcare dollars.

Here are some tips for making the most of the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period:

  • Review your plan’s Annual Notice of Change to understand updates in coverage, premiums, and out-of-pocket costs for the new year.
  • Check if your healthcare providers are still in-network and confirm that your prescriptions are covered.
  • Check how your Rx might be affected

Making informed decisions during open enrollment can help you avoid unexpected costs and ensure you have access to the care you need. Remember, any changes you make during this period will take effect on the first day of the following month. Stay proactive, and take advantage of resources available to guide you through the process.
